A simple question, with a concise definition given in the PMBOK ® Guide .
“A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”
Problem is, this could apply to the making of a cup of coffee, which is not a project, but an activity.
The ISO 21500 Guidance on Project Management gives a more detailed definition.
“A project consists of a unique set of processes consisting of coordinated and controlled activities with start and end dates, performed to achieve project objectives.”
Please note that this definition states “processes, activities and objectives” all in the plural,
which would disqualify making a cup of coffee or any other simple endeavor that comprises of only one process or activity.
Important! In the PMP ® exam use the PMBOK ® Guide definition, in preference to other definitions.
